As technology evolves, the ways in which we live, work, play and interact with others do as well. From home automation systems that help us minimize power consumption to apps let us share real-time traffic information with other commuters, technology continues to make our lives easier and more efficient. That’s why it’s always exciting to see how technology is evolving and making a positive impact in the human resource industry.

New systems, gadgets and apps continue to enhance the processes and systems that HR managers and business owners rely on. And those who take tech-focused approach have much to gain. From recruiting and onboarding to training and engagement, these new technologies are helping HR managers become more effective and productive at their jobs. They are leveraging new HR technologies and apps to handle more tasks in less time, exceed employee expectations and build organizational cultures that succeed.

Below are a few upcoming technological advancements that are worth keeping an eye on as we move into 2018.

Virtual Reality Technology

Virtual reality (VR) has been around for some time. And while it was initially developed for gaming and entertainment, technology vendors are extending its uses for HR tasks too. Mostly, VR technology is now being used to offer leadership training and for other corporate learning initiatives. One example is how companies can use VR to coach HR personnel on recruiting and interviewing processes. Instead of more traditional one-on-one or in-class education, it offers the potential for near-real-life experiences without leaving the office. VR is also being included as part of employee wellness programs. At some offices, employees can grab a VR device and spend 15 minutes at the beach to ease stresses. Doesn’t that sound nice?

Artificial Intelligence

When it comes to artificial intelligence, it seems like the sky is the limit. In the HR industry specifically, many new interesting applications on the horizon. HR managers and staff have a lot of tasks on their plate. It’s no wonder why they are looking at AI to alleviate some of the work. New AI applications can help to automate the applicant screening process and even answer or direct questions during onboarding. This new form of intelligence could also mine and compile training courses and make suggestions to employees based on performance feedback. However, ethical standards have not been established. So, while all these AI application sound interesting, adoption for this technology could lag until legal frameworks are firmed up.

Data Analytics Dashboards

Many businesses are already running various systems to simplify HR tasks. However, rarely are all these systems consolidated into one platform. HR managers do not have the time to sift through data from different systems to identify process issues or employee engagement opportunities. It’s why, now than ever before, HR managers and business owners are looking at data analytics to consolidate information and retrieve valuable insights.

For instance, some companies are building manager-level dashboards to help HR teams better understand how to make the work experience better. With analytics built-into these dashboards, HR managers can do more than simply extract and manage HRMS data such as turnover and performance ratings, payroll information, sentiment data such as employee feedback and benefits program outcomes. They can automate reports and identify gaps or patterns in employee behaviours or HR processes and use these results to make meaningful improvements.
