Our team Principal, Donald Chu, has worked in senior positions in the employee benefits field since 2001. From 2001-2008, Donald worked at a major insurer as an associate regional manager. In 2008, he was recruited to join the executive team of a mid-sized benefit administration firm, where he led a business unit responsible for over $30 million of annual premium revenue. Donald has also consulted and coached a wide variety of clients, ranging from entrepreneurs and small businesses to associations and large companies. Helping clients address organizational HR concerns by implementing sound, viable solutions is the most satisfying part of the process for Donald. He founded BenefitDeck in 2012 to do just that.
Donald holds the Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) designation, has completed a number of executive leadership courses from the UBC Sauder School of Business Executive Education program, and has a Bachelors of Business Administration (BBA) degree from Simon Fraser University. Donald is also licensed in the provinces of BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nova Scotia and Ontario to sell Life, and Accident and Sickness insurance.
Donald is currently writing the Canadian Health Insurance Handbook, with the goal to help employers navigate the increasingly complex landscape of providing health Insurance to their valued employees. Donald is a highly sought after speaker for various groups and associations including the Real Estate Investment Network, The Difference Engine/The Envy Generator group, Thermal Environmental Comfort Association, Economic Development Association of BC, and Digital Media Association of BC. He speaks about group benefits trends, workplace health and wellness, cost containment strategies, and organizational health risk management strategies.
Within the community, Donald has served on a number of non-profit association boards including Advocis – the Financial Advisors Association of Canada. Donald also led ongoing fundraising efforts for the United Way, Big Brothers, and the Salvation Army Hope in The City breakfast.
In his free time, Donald enjoys spending time with his wife and four children. He enjoys keeping up with technology, auto trends, as well as outdoor pursuits like snowboarding, hiking, and camping.
